Green living - Natural Birth

I was planning a Free Birth (unassisted birth). Reading all the useful information online gave me confidence in myself. In the last months of my pregnancy I started seeing a midwife partly because my family did not support the idea of Free Birth and partly because the midwife gave me a great deal on her fee. My plan was to have a water birth, to keep the umbilical cord attached as in Lotus Birth, to suck out the mucus with my mouth, and in case of excessive bleeding to eat the afterbirth or at least take a bite. I watched my diet drinking green smoothies, eating fruit on an empty stomach by itself for breakfast, eating soaked pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and drinking sesame milk for extra calcium, iron, and essential fatty acids.

Several days before the baby's birth I was severely emotionally frustrated. Additionally, my midwife got nervous because she suspected low amnionic fluid and was "pushing" me to either start on natural intervention, such as stripping of membranes and taking blue and black cohosh, or to get an ultrasound. I was opposed to either. My baby gave me a feeling of calmness and patient love throughout my pregnancy. And even at that moment I felt calm and certain of the baby's well being. I did not want to play God by determining my baby's birthday. However, on the first of January I started feeling contractions that were not increasing in intensity over the duration of the entire day. My husband got the nesting instinct and finished up updating the kitchen. On the next day I woke up at 4 am with contractions. After cleaning the house I went back to bed at 6 am to sleep until 8 am. My 34 month old daughter, Heidi, and I enjoyed our seasonal fruit breakfast together. My contractions were irregular and I was not sure how long this would last. So I decided to get serious and I asked my husband to "donate" the best medicine there is to speed up labor. Our daughter was watching a DVD while the semen was allowed to work on the softening, ripening, and dilating of my cervix. Later on we went to the grocery store to purchase ingredients for a birthday cake for the new baby. The contractions got extremely intense and I called my midwife at 11:26 am from the grocery store to ask her to come to our house. We arrived back at home around noon and Heidi got into the bathtub together with me. Five minutes later the midwife arrived. After taking my and the baby's vitals she gave us our privacy to enjoy our bath. Heidi and I were playing in between contractions. My husband brought me a big pot of Red Raspberry Tea that I drank in a short time and requested more. Heidi with her calmness, patience, and trusting nature was the best labor coach anyone can wish for. She did not panic nor was she excited or nervous. A bath together with mommy was such a normal event in her life. The duration of that day's bath was a special treat. Heidi left the tub at around 12:50 pm and went downstairs to eat clementines. I was in the bath by myself visualizing a flower opening up and pressing two combs against the tips of my fingers with every contraction. I asked my husband to time the contractions and tell the midwife the results. She came in to measure the baby's heartbeat. We decided to change the water because it was blue. Listening to the running water contributed to the dilating and descending. The contractions were extremely intense and I could not concentrate on my flower visualization anymore. During those especially intense moments I could only ask God to dilate my cervix. With the next contraction I felt a different sensation. I could not tell if it was the urgency to push. I waited for the next contraction, after which I asked my midwife to check my cervix (for the first time during my pregnancy). She said everything was clear and I should just do what my body wants me to do. I intended not to push at all because my perineum tore during Heidi's birth as a result of extreme pushing. However, the urge to push came that I could not possibly ignore. I was sitting the entire time and my thighs began to hurt just like muscle soreness. My midwife massaged my thighs, which felt wonderful. I was hot and asked her to put cold compresses on my face, which felt heavenly.

At  1:07 pm I had a contraction that broke the amnionic sack and a gush of amnionic fluid came out. Several contractions later at 1:15 pm Toby was born. He crowned and fully emerged in just a single one contraction. My midwife was listening to the baby's heart beat the second he came out. This is why she did not have time to put on gloves and had to catch the shooting-out Toby with her bare hands.

In conclusion: To have a natural short "easy" birth the mother's nutrition is the number one priority. Animal products are poor choices, while raw food, especially Green Smoothies, is the best choice.
